These poems were written at the request of Wales For Europe • Cymru Dros Ewrop, who are distributing thousands of leaflets in Cardiff over the weekend in six languages. Ifor ap Glyn has used the Italian and Spanish lines in his first poem – In English –“You will always be our European brothers and sisters”. ‘Croeso’ means ‘Welcome’.

Sarete sempre
i nostri fratelli e sorelle europei
Siaradwn â’n gilydd
mewn lliwiau gwahanol,
a rhwng banllefau’r soseri,
cymeradwyaeth cwpanau
a hisian stêm llond stadiwm,
mae ein dinas
fel caffi cyfandir cyfan.
A’n lleisiau fel tyllau haul
mewn coedwig tywyll…
Siempre seréis
nuestros hermanos y hermanas europeos
mae’n croeso ni yma, yn aros ‘run fath…
Cardiff 3.6.17
Sarete sempre
i nostri fratelli e sorelle europei
We talk to each other
in different colours,
and between the applause of saucers,
the acclamation of cups,
and the steam hiss of a full stadium,
our city
is café to a whole continent!
And our voices are like sun-lit holes
In the dark of the forest…
Siempre seréis
nuestros hermanos y hermanas europeos
here, our croeso remains constant…

Tydi’r bienvenido ddim yn newydd yma;
rhannwn yr un cyfenwau;
Esteban, Zamora;
mor Gymreig â Dowlais, neu Abercraf.
A’r un fu’r benvenuti
i’r Bracchi, Sidoli, Calzaghe;
nhw sodrodd eu tricolore
yng nghalon ein baner ni.
A chan y rhannwn gymaint
o hanes, doed a ddêl,
mi rannwn ein harwyr hefyd –
John Charles a Gareth Bale!
Real v Juve 3.6.17
The bienvenido ‘s not new here;
we share the same surnames;
Esteban, Zamora;
as Welsh as Dowlais, or Abercraf.
And the benvenuti ‘s still the same
for the Bracchi, Sidoli, Calzaghe;
who put their tricolore
at the heart of our flag.
And since we share so much history,
(whoever may prevail)
we’ll share our heroes with you too –
John Charles and Gareth Bale!
