Give us what was promised – It’s the least that we need
Today we launch our Give Us What Was Promised campaign, calling on Conservative MPs in Wales to honour the commitments made in 2019 as we enter the final stages of negotiations between the EU and the UK.
At the very least, this should mean an absolute commitment to achieving a trade deal, ruling out ‘no deal’, and ensuring that current standards and protections are maintained.
We’re calling on Conservative MPs in Wales to deliver on the obligations of the Withdrawal Agreement or principles it agreed with the EU in the Political Declaration, as well as on commitments made in the 2019 Conservative Party Manifesto.
This must surely require that you hold your own government to the following:
- to negotiate an ambitious wide-ranging agreement with the EU, including a Free Trade Agreement, and therefore not to contemplate leaving without a deal
- not to allow trade negotiations, the Agriculture Bill or any other measure to compromise our high environmental protection, animal welfare and food standards
- to ensure that there is no erosion of our high standards on human rights, workers’ rights and consumer and environmental protections
- and to ensure that trade deals do not transgress or erode the rights of the devolved governments
Make no mistake, honouring these commitments is the very least we need for Wales. They will not be enough to prevent the inevitable significant damage that will follow the end of the implementation period on 1st January 2021. Delivering on these commitments will not lead to a ‘good Brexit’.
This week, the EU published a communication on readiness for the end of the transition period, listing the disruption we should expect to supply chains, trade and travel – regardless of any deal struck. As the document says:
“The choices made by the United Kingdom’s government on the future relationship and on not extending the transition period mean that these inevitable disruptions will occur as of 1 January 2021 and risk compounding the pressure that businesses are already under due to the COVID-19 outbreak.”
All of this will hit us on top of the Covid-19 pandemic, as we struggle to deal with the economic fall-out and may well be in the grip of another wave. We’re already seeing the combined impact of Brexit and Covid-19, with huge job losses at Airbus in Flintshire and the suspension of plans for the Ineos plant in Bridgend.
What of all those other promises we’ve heard since 2016? One of the easiest deals in human history? No downside to Brexit, only a considerable upside? The Brexit dividend? They will not be forgotten.
Give us what was promised. It won’t be enough to protect us from the inevitable damage and disruption of leaving the European Union. But it’s the least the we should expect.

Heddiw, rydym yn lansio ein hymgyrch Anrhydeddwch eich Addewid, sydd yn galw ar ASau Ceidwadol yng Nghymru i anrhydeddu’r ymrwymiadau a wnaed yn 2019 wrth i ni ddechrau cyfnod terfynol y trafodaethau rhwng yr UE a’r DU.
Dylai hyn olygu ymrwymiad absoliwt i gyflawni cytundeb masnach o leiaf, gan ddiystyrru ‘dim cytundeb’, a sicrhau bod safonau ac amddiffyniadau presennol yn cael eu cynnal.
Rydym yn galw ar ASau Ceidwadol yng Nghymru i gyflawni goblygiadau’r Cytundeb Ymadael neu’r egwyddorion a gytunwyd gyda’r UE yn y Datganiad Gwleidyddol, yn ogystal â’r ymrwymiadau a wnaed ym Maniffesto 2019 y Blaid Geidwadol:
- trafod cytundeb uchelgeisiol ac eang gyda’r UE, yn cynnwys Cytundeb Masnach Rydd, ac felly peidio ystyried gadael heb gytundeb
- peidio caniatáu trafodaethau masnach, y Bil Amaethyddiaeth nac unrhyw fesur arall i beryglu ein safonau uchel o ran diogelu’r amgylchedd, lles anifeiliaid a bwyd
- sicrhau nad yw ein safonau uchel ar hawliau dynol, hawliau gweithwyr a diogelu defnyddwyr a’r amgylchedd yn cael eu herydu
- a sicrhau nad yw cytundebau masnach yn torri rheolau nac yn erydu hawliau llywodraethau datganoledig
Heb os, anrhydeddu’r ymrwymiadau hyn yw’r lleiaf sydd ei angen arnom ar gyfer Cymru. Ni fyddant yn ddigon i atal y niwed sylweddol anochel fydd yn dilyn diwedd y cyfnod gweithredu ar 1 Ionawr 2021. Ni fydd cyflawni’r ymrwymiadau hyn yn arwain at ‘Brexit da’.
Yr wythnos diwethaf, cyhoeddodd yr UE gyfathrebiad ynghylch parodrwydd ar gyfer diwedd y cyfnod pontio, gan restru’r amhariad y gallwn ei ddisgwyl i gadwyni cyflenwi, masnach a theithio – waeth pa gytundeb fydd. Fel y dywed y ddogfen:
“Mae’r dewisiadau a wnaed gan lywodraeth y Deyrnas Unedig ar y berthynas yn y dyfodol ac ar beidio ymestyn y cyfnod pontio, yn golygu y bydd yr amhariadau anochel hyn yn digwydd o 1 Ionawr 2021 ac y bydd perygl y bydd y pwysau y mae busnesau’n ei wynebu’n barod oherwydd yr achosion o COVID-19, yn gwaethygu.”
Bydd hyn i gyd yn digwydd ar ben pandemig Covid-19, wrth i ni frwydro i ymdopi â’r effaith economaidd ac mae ton arall yn bosibilrwydd cryf. Rydym eisoes yn gweld effaith Brexit a Covid-19 ar y cyd, gyda nifer fawr o swyddi’n mynd yn Airbus yn Sir y Fflint a chynlluniau ar gyfer gwaith Ineos ym Mhen-y-bont ar Ogwr yn cael eu hatal dros dro.
Beth am yr holl addewidion eraill hynny a glywsom ers 2016? Un o’r cytundebau hawsaf mewn hanes? Dim anfanteision i Brexit, dim ond manteision sylweddol? Difidend Brexit? Ni fyddant yn angof.
Anrhydeddwch eich addewid. Ni fydd yn ddigon i’n diogelu rhag niwed ac effaith anochel gadael yr Undeb Ewropeaidd. Ond dyma’r lleiaf y dylem ei ddisgwyl.
